Community Ambulance Association (CAA) of Ambler was founded by residents in 1941, to provide emergency treatment and transportation. In 2004 they moved to their present 19,200-square foot building at 1414 Butler Pike in Upper Dublin, which has living and sleeping quarters, meeting space, and training facilities for programs such as First Aid and CPR. They maintain a fleet of three Mobile Intensive Care Units, one officer’s vehicle and four EMS bike patrol units.
CAA provides advanced life support coverage 24/7, 365 days per year. Each ambulance is staffed with a PA-certified Emergency Medical Technician, a PA-licensed Paramedic. CAA also relies on its invaluable volunteers.
The vehicles meet or exceed the state mandates for required equipment. Each ambulance carries a 12-lead EKG/defibrillator and additional equipment to assist in the handling of a variety of emergency situations, and it has the ability to transport two patients. The average life of an ambulance is three to five years, and the replacement cost is approximately $150,000.
CAA serves the Borough of Ambler and Lower Gwynedd, and parts of Upper Dublin Township. They also contract emergency services for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and respond to all emergencies that occur between the Willow Grove and Mid-County tollbooths. They respond to approximately 2,800 emergency calls annually in their coverage area.
CAA is an independent nonprofit emergency ambulance association. The majority of their funding comes from billing for services rendered, their annual subscription drive for operating funds combined with yearly donations from the local municipalities.
