Wissahickon Fire Company proudly protects over 16,500 people primarily living in a residential area of 10 square miles. The private company operates out of two stations – Ambler and Lower Gwynedd and is served by members on a volunteer basis.
The Wissahickon Fire Company was founded in 1891 by a group of dedicated volunteers to protect the Borough of Ambler and the surrounding area from fire. Today the company consists of 85+ active firefighters, all volunteers. These men and women continue to provide primary fire and rescue services to Ambler Borough and Lower Gwynedd Township, and are called by numerous other fire companies to assist when needed. Along with traditional fire response, Wissahickon prides itself in its specialty rescue capabilities, including Vehicle, High Angle, Trench, Confined Space, Collapse, and Water Rescue. The company also responds to hazardous materials incidents, searches, and investigations and they hold weekly drills and special training at the Montgomery County Fire Academy. Wissahickon is also a member of the Eastern Montgomery County Large Diameter Hose Task Force.
They maintain 10 units of fire equipment and portable equipment totaling over $3 million. Wissahickon is supported by an annual fundraising campaign, and by donations from residents and businesses.
